Quality Spices That Make Dishes Hum

Quality spices and seasonings are the key element in any dish. They change a bland or mediocre recipe into one that is memorable. My focus switched to widening my awareness on the types of spices and seasonings available, as well as, the flavors they could bring to the dishes I prepare when becoming vegan.

Recently the grocery stores have been letting me down when it comes to fresh peppers. Combined with the rising food prices and supply, I find I want to keep spices on hand that can meet my needs.
How old are these spices on the shelves anyway? They are in the warehouse and now on the grocery shelf. In my search for quality spices I began looking online rather than the grocery shelves.
I am partnering with The Spice Lab for this review and for my Cinco de Mayo recipes. I can give them 5 stars on the quality of the spices I receive and love several things about the spices they sell. A lot of the spices come in 3 different packaging and sizes. I love the french jars and they fit in my spice rack like they were made for it.

Review and Recipes

I have these spices for review :
Spices that make dishes hum

  • Habanero Powder
  • Sold in three sizes, The one in a french jar sells for 10.95. I can not describe the taste of any of these spices with justice. I have been using this spice to add that extra zing in my dishes I serve. Here is a quick but lovely recipe I use for The Spice Labs Habanero Powder.
    Quick Pasta dish

    Pasta Veggies with TVP

    Season TVP- 2 cups
    Rotini- 3/4 cup per person
    Frozen Mixed Vegetables- 1 bag
    Can of Beans (optional)
    Vegetable Broth- 32 oz
    Small onion- 1
Garlic Cloves 3 good size ones
    Olive Oil
Habanero powder (The Spice Lab)- 1/16th or 1/8th to 1/4th tsp

  • Saute onions and garlic in small skillet add beans and TVP. Simmer
  • Add a small amount of habanero powder and stir. Test taste and add more if needed. Start with an 1/8 of a tsp or less then taste test. You can always add more but can not decrease.
  • In a 2 qt pan pour in vegetable broth. Enough that will cover the rotini.
  • Bring to boil and put in pasta.
  • Set a timer for 2 minutes.
  • After the timer goes off, add your frozen veggies and set the timer for 5 minutes.
  • Drain and return to pan adding the saute onions, garlic, beans and TVP
  • Serve like this or add a sauce of your choice.
  • Here is my favorite way to add a pasta sauce.
    Favorite Pasta Sauce – 24oz
Cashews- 1 cup (soak overnight) If you have a high power blender than omit soaking over night
    Nutritional Yeast= 1/4 cup
Put nuts in blender and grind up, add nutritional yeast and sauce.
    Warm and pour over pasta.

  • Chipotle Chile Powder
  • All Natural Kosher Gluten Free – French glass jar- 7.95.
This Chipotle Chile Powder brings a smokey quality of heat to any dish and is great for Mexican dishes. Sprinkle some over buttered corn for a true Mexican flair.

  • Diced Orange Peel – Kosher Gluten-Free Non-GMO All Natural Spice
  • 4 oz resealable bag $14.95 I used the diced orange peel on top of my Kings Bread for my community coffee clutch.

  • Ground Cinnamon Powder
  • 12 oz resealable bag 9.95.

    Cassia ground cinnamon

The resealable bag is quality and seals extremely well. It will keep the contents fresh for a very long time.
If you think you know what cinnamon tastes like then guess again. This cinnamon is all natural Vietnamese cinnamon. Pure quality and it proves it in the first bite.
Lovely flavor without over powering. I will never go back to store bought cinnamon again. I use this now on my Pan Dulce. My husband noticed the difference in the first bite and said, “This is really quality cinnamon isn’t it?”
